Free Things to Do in Rio: People Watching at the Beach

See and be seen! People watching on the beach is a popular activity, especially because of the gym culture here in Rio de Janeiro, everyone likes to look their best while catching some sun. If you are seeking some sun and sand you have a number of options when it comes to beaches in Rio.

First off, we recommend getting your postcard perfect picture down at Botafogo Beach. You can get a really great shot of the beach with the Sugar Loaf in the background. We don’t recommend swimming at this beach as the water is often polluted by the boats in the harbour, but the view and the very short walk from Beach Backpackers Hostel makes it worth it!

After this you have the choice of Copacabanna or Ipanema Beach. Both beaches are quickly accessible from the metro which is two minutes walk from the entrance to our hostel.

Copacabana Beach

How to get there from Beach Backpackers Hostel

Botafogo Beach

To get to Botafogo beach turn right after exiting the hostel
Turn left at the corner and keep walking straight until you get to the beach. Be careful when crossing the road as it is very busy at this intersection, make use of the underground walkway.

Copacabana Beach

To get to Copacabana Beach turn right after exiting the hostel
Turn left at the corner and keep walking straight until you see the metro stop
Take the metro one stop to Cardeal Arcoverde Station or two stops to Siqueira Campos Station (Depending on how far down the beach you want to be!)
Exit the station and walk downhill to reach the beach

Ipanema Beach

To get to Copacabana Beach turn right after exiting the hostel
Turn left at the corner and keep walking straight until you reach Botafogo Metro station.
Take the metro five stops to Ipanema/Gal. Osorio Station.
Exit the station and simply follow the crowds a few hundred metres to reach the beach.

What to know before you hit the beach

The sun is strongest from 12-3pm, so cover up with plenty of sunscreen or better yet head indoors for a drink during this period. You can rent an umbrella for BR$5 and a chair for another BR$5.

You can buy drinks and snacks at the beach, it is usually cheaper to buy your drinks from the sellers who walk along the beach rather than from the stands that rent out the umbrellas and chairs.

If you are going to Ipanema Beach head to Posto 9 or 10 for the young, lively crowd, you will also find the gay section of the beach nearby here.

Free Things to do in Rio: Visit the Selarón Steps in Lapa

Step up, step up! This is a really unique backpacker attraction in Rio de Janeiro and the best part? It’s free! Well, you still have to pay the bus fare to get there but c’mon, you’re not that hard up are you?

The Selerón stairs are a living work of art, created Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón who claims it as his “tribute to the Brazilian people”. He began renovating the steps on a whim in 1990 and the steps quickly became a focal point of interest in the area.

Selerón Stairs

The tiles used are constantly changing as the artist removes and replaces tile with new ones he buys or receives as donations from visitors. Selerón has also funded his constantly changing artwork by selling paintings of the pregnant woman image that crops up constantly in his work. Selarón doesn’t comment on this re-occurring iconography except to say that it represents a personal problem from his past.

[sthumbs=34|45|38|41|44|35|36|42|43|37|39|40,160,3,n,center,]

The steps are located between the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighbourhoods and are very close by to a number of other tourist attractions so you can really get to see a lot in this area! There are also a number of nice restaurants in the vicinity if you want to grab a bite to eat.

How to get there from Beach Backpackers Hostel.

  1. Leaving the hostel, turn right and walk to the end of the street.
  2. Turn left onto Rua Voluntários da Pátria and cross onto the other side of the street for the bus stop
  3. Take any bus heading for Lapa (most of them go there!)
  4. Get off just infront of the famous Lapa arches (you cant miss them!)
  5. Refer to the map below for the exact location of the stairs in relation to the Lapa arches.

The area where the stairs are can look a little shady as it is used by the homeless as somewhere to sleep. It is safe during the day as there is a police presence in the area as they are used to tourists wandering about. Just keep your wits about you and you will be absolutely fine.

Free Things to do in Rio: Visit São João Batista Cemetery

São João Batista Cemetery is a short walk away from Beach Backpackers Hostel and definitely worthy of a stroll around with your camera in hand. It is a must for any keen photographer and best of all it is free to enter.

The entrance  is impressive as are hundreds of rows of graves, each sporting statues and religious icons. Along the central avenue of the cemetery you will find the elaborate tombs which look more like small ornate houses than graves! Some boast life size statues depicting religious scenes. The large old trees lining the avenue provide pleasant dappled shade and add to the peaceful atmosphere.

In the back ground you will see Christ the Redeemer overlooking the city and echoing the religious statues in the cemetery.

The cemetery has a few notable graves, among them is Antonio Carlos Jobim – Brazilian musician (composer of “The Girl From Ipanema“). You will also find the grave of Emílio Garrastazu Médici, the 28th Brazilian President.

[sthumbs=29|31|30|33|32,160,3,n,center,]

How to get there from Beach Backpackers Hostel:

  1. Turn right out the door of the hostel.
  2. Walk to the end of the street and turn right again.
  3. Take the first left and walk for two blocks, at the end of the street you will see a large white wall of the cemetery.
  4. Turn right and walk two blocks to the entrance.

They Grow Up So Fast

All our guests at Beach Backpackers Hostel are very surprised when they hear how young our wee boy Charlie is. Today he turned 9 months old and look at the size of him! Here are some pics from when he was just a golden labrador puppy and some more recent snaps. He has grown so fast that he doesn’t even know how big and strong he is, which is the reason he bumps into things all the time.

You will find Charlie on Facebook too!

New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro

What are you going to wear? Whatever it is it better be white. That’s the tradition in Rio de Janeiro on New year’s Eve.

In the run up to the big event you will see clothing stores blanching their window displays with mannequins dressed head to toe in crisp white gear. Street vendors will also be out in force and it’s a good opportunity to pick up some cheap accessories like white rimmed glasses or a white cowboy hat.

The only place to be to count down the last seconds of the year is of course Copacabana Beach where you will see all the hotels lit up and a string of cruise ships lining the coast, each adding their own twinkle to the horizon. This is where the tremendous show erupts at the strike of midnight. Throngs of white clad Brazilians greet the new year with a roar of “Feliz Ano Novo!” as a truly impressive fireworks lights up the sky. All timed to classical music, the pyrotechnics are something to behold and really remind you of why Rio is such a great city to celebrate in.

Beach Backpackers Hostel was there of course, take a look at the photos below to see our guests fully kitted out in dazzling white and the view of the fireworks display on the beach.

Happy New Year to everyone who has stayed with us and all the best with travels in 2011!
